Mack, 28. has appeared in every one of the last 80 games of the Browns and has served as an anchor on the defensive line. Mack is, however, only a few months away from entering the free agent market where he'd have an excellent chance of becoming the highest-paid center of Madden NFL 23 and possibly eclipsing the seven-year, $54 million deal Nick Mangold received from the New York Jets in 2010.

That means the Browns will likely have to open their wallets in an enormous way to reach an extended deal with Mack prior to his entry into the market. If they don't that, the Browns could opt to offer Mack their franchise tag designation that would essentially ensure he stays in Cleveland at the very minimum during the 2014 season.

If Mack gets the franchise tag it is safe T.J. Ward cannot. Ward is not eligible for the franchise tag. Pro Bowl safety is another important offseason goal for Farmer as well as the value on the franchise tag the position of safety is about $3 million less than that of offensive linemen. This means that the Browns could possibly save cash by offering Ward the tag instead of Mack.
