Blizzard's plan to solve this issue with Diablo 3 was to take control of trading markets. This was also one of the reasons behind the game's decision to require an all-time-online internet connection. Wilson asserts that the second you offer an offline client, the hackers "got you." Always online , and the auction house were Blizzard's failed attempts at resolving issues from Diablo 2.

In the short time following its release in 2012 Diablo 3's auction house was recognized as one the games biggest flaws, getting a constant mocking and criticism by the community. Yet removing it wasn't easy and it wasn't because of technical headaches. Instead, its delayed 2014 removal was due to an auction house had been a promised aspect of the game. It was printed on all its retail boxes and there were legal issues with cutting it.

"The reason we didn't eliminate it as soon as we discovered that it was a problem was legally, we did not think we could because the product was advertised on cartons," added Wilson. "So we actually spent a lot of time trying to figure out the legal issues until we came to the conclusion that 'OK, we think it's worth it to try it and if we do end up getting an action, but it's not that bad.'"

Funny thing is, when everything is said and done Wilson admits that the auction house didn't bring Blizzard any money in the first place, and says that the auction house could have earned more than 10 or 15 million dollars Wilson would have been "surprised." And while it sounds like a lot it wasn't, this former Diablo 3 designer countered that World of Warcraft makes that kind of money every few hours or as often. A different dev in the room joked that, as is the norm the game will "always just take the responsibility of lawyers." Also, everyone was against it, and it didn't generate much cash. It was a complete waste of time for everyone involved!
