A small, sleepy village with very little importance until it's threatened by hordes of cultists and the undead. Players learn from Diablo fan favorite Deckard Cain that in order to restore peace in the village (and eventually the entire world) players must journey across Sanctuary to track down and destroy the shards from the Worldstone to prevent the calamity of necrotic.

In the midst of that chaos, there's another fight: the conflict between the Immortals with the Shadows which is known in the game as the "Cycle Of Strife." According to the game's lore it was first fought when a powerful female named Daedessa the Builder gave birth to two children, Kion as well as Akeba.

To her son Kion she presented an artifact referred to as the Eternal Crown, and bestowed Kion the duty of guarding Sanctuary from the dead. In the end, Kion used his power and the crown to create the Immortals An organization that was focused in the defense of the realm.

But in the eyes of her younger daughter Akeba, Daedessa gave an even more significant responsibility: to be in the shadows. She was constantly trying to test her brother's vigilance to ensure the Immortals were always worthy of their station. Akeba therefore formed a group , called the Shadows and was aware that should they ever surpass the Immortals the Shadows would be Immortals themselves.

Although Diablo Immortal retains the action play elements and isometric view associated with the series the thing that sets it apart from its predecessors is the fact that it's a free-to-play, mobile-based MMO.
