"[Wehad to] rebuild a lot of it through the things people left in their residences," Erich Schaefer said. "I had a big chunk of it. Went home, pulled out the hard drive, or whatever we did back then. Spent a few days reconstructing it, and it was working perfectly, but it lost all the details. We lost lots of assets, artwork assets. It would make it very challenging for Blizzard to make an Diablo 2 remaster because all the assets we used are pretty much gone. They'd need to create them from scratch."

One of the rumours that circulated prior to BlizzCon 2019 was that Blizzard had planned to announce the release of a Diablo Remaster, but that was not the case. However, the company did reveal Diablo IV to much celebration from the fans after the disappointing welcome to Diablo Immortal announcement a year before.

The Schaefer brothers and Brevik created the original Diablo through their own studio Condor, which Blizzard acquired shortly before the release of the first Diablo in 1996. Erich Schaefer said the buyout couldn't have come at a better time since Condor was in financial trouble. The studio was barely making ends meet, and apparently didn't have enough cash to cover some of its taxes.
