The trading of virtual currencies to real-world currency can be a source of trouble for many online games, disrupting in-game economics, destabilizing player experiences or making games win-to-win opportunities. In RS Gold the trading of the virtual gold has been a particular problem with bots extracting the resource, and even claims that the ability to purchase in-game bonds in real money amounts to gambling.

In the present, Jagex has laid out strategies to address the issue. In a blog entry that is credited to "The RuneScape Team", the publisher states that "gold purchased through RWT is a problem for any online game that has the possibility of trading currency" as well as that even though its "Anti-Cheating Team has been doing a lot in the fight against RWT sellers both in and out of the game" however, they will be taking stronger measures with immediate effective.

As a result, the developer appears to be taking the more radical route, saying "we're considering in the future to phase down the Duel Arena out of RuneScape completely." In the meantime it will put in place "some quick-term actions" to improve PvP "until our team of developers is able to create an extensive update that fully substitutes for the Duel Arena next year with RS Gold For Sale."

There will be a limit to the total amount GP or gold points which players can stake on an event at the Duel Arena. Players can wager "no less than 50m GP per duel". Additional rules haven't been detailed as yet.
